If a novice knows the name of no other classical musician, the chances are verry good that he has heard of Mozart. Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart achieved almost rock star status during his life time, yet he constantly rode a financial rollercoaster and was virtually penniless when he died. Like his rock star counterparts, he lived the high life when he was able and almost always lived beyond his means.

It is very quite that his very brilliance was his ruin, for, like many who achieve fame at an early age, they fine it difficult to handle. We know that he loved good food and drink and indulged himself, even when it was beyond his resources to do so. Among his favorites were trout, liver dumplings with sauerkraut, Paprikash with Späetzle, and Uccelline, a dish very similar to veal scaloppini.
Mozart was born on January 27 1756. What better to celebrate his genius than serving one of his favorite foods for dinner. |
The dishes I would choose are a Paprikash, rich in onion, garlic and paprika, or a delicate Stuffed_Trout_in_Wine_Sauce.
This old photo allegedly shows, Mozart’s wife Constanze, (lower left). When Mozart died in 1791, Constanze was only 29. She lived until she was in her 80’s. The original, a daguerreotype was taken in 1840. |
