Makes about 3 quarts

Who can resist the image of sitting on the veranda on a hot, hot summer day sipping a tall frosty glass of perfect and refreshing lemonade?  That doesn’t come out of a can or a bottle.  To capture that real, old time flavor you have to start from scratch and here’s how.

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice

2 quarts of cold water

1 lemon, sliced

Sprigs of fresh mint

Place the two cups of sugar and two cups of water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until all the sugar is completely melted.  Allow to cool, then put in a pitcher with the 2 cups of fresh squeezed lemon juice.  Stir well.  Add the cold water and stir.  Add the lemon slices and several sprigs of fresh mint.

To serve, pour into tall glasses filled with ice.  Garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint.  Serve with a long straw.
