Some recipes call for buttermilk.  Few of today’s households have buttermilk around on a regular basis.  If you have no buttermilk simply add a bit of lemon juice or white distilled vinegar to regular milk; about 1 teaspoon to the cup.

 

Buttermilk is usually called for when a recipe uses baking soda instead of baking powder.  Baking soda needs the acid in buttermilk to activate it.
