Rembrandt on Women:
"There was a man in the land of Uz
and the Lord gavehim everything his human heart could desire
but beyond all this, the man was in love with his wife.
This was his greatest treasure, for he knew something most men never learn or even suspect; When one woman gives herself to you, you posess all women; Women of every race and clime - an more than that -
the moon, the stars, all miracles and legends are yours. |
The brown skinned girls who inflame your senses with their play,
The cool yellow haired women who entice - and escape you,
The gentle ones who serfe you, the slender ones who torment you,
And the mothers who bore and suckled you,
All women whom God created out of the teeming fullness of the earth are yours, in the love of
one woman.
Throw a purple mantle over her shoulders and she becomes the Queen of Sheba.
Lay your towsled head blindly on her breast and she is Delilah waiting to enthrall you.
Take her garments from her, strip the last veil from her body, and she is a chaste Susannah
covering her nakedness with fluttering hands.
Gaze upon her as you would gaze upon a thousand strange women.
Never call her yours.
Her secrets are inexaustable. You will never know them all."
